Age
Shadows around
the eyes,
high cheek bones,
a cheerless grin.
The skull beneath
the skin,
a grotesque
beauty.
The indignity
of time,
The violence
of age.
Unsettling
memories.
A frightening
loneliness.

Getting old can't be that bad. Right? Right? I always thought I was immune to the fear of age but feel a bit of it creeping in around the edges of my subconscious, causing a little too much attention to how taut my skin is around my eyes, at the corners of my mouth and across my throat. Your poem perfectly expresses why this unpleasant awareness of mortality has begun its slow crawl into my thoughts.
