In the secret
shade of
hidden places;
where crumbling
walled alley
ways and back
fences meet.

Young boys
play unseen
on a sagging
garage roof
under tangled
overhanging
trees.

A hairless
tailed,
red eyed,
rat faced
possum hangs
staring
from a branch.

Still and silent
in this familiar
place, where we
played; hiding
from the men
that we would
become,
